Repaying Society

Banyu Life Science Foundation International Founding Chairman
Kenjiro Nagasaka

A company can only continue its activities through both direct and indirect supports from society. It is therefore very natural for a company to try to repay society in some way.

Banyu Pharmaceutical fostered this willingness for many years, and started the following 3 initiatives. Firstly, the Organic Compound Symposium was held in Sapporo in 1989. Fortunately, at that time Dr. Kunio Suzuki, who has a very broad personal network, was working for Banyu. Thanks to the endorsement given by so many scholars and professors, this seminar invoked an outstanding response. This caused us to reconsider the original idea of just running the seminar once. Banyu decided to hold the seminar every year, expanding the location to Sendai in 1990, Fukuoka in 1991, and Nagoya in 1995. With the strong supports by Dr. Teruaki Mukaiyama, Dr. Ryouji Noyori, and all other leading researchers in this field, Banyu have been successfully strengthening this activity year by year. Further, among these outstanding instructors, both Dr. Noyori (2001) and Dr. Grubbs (2005) have been awarded the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, and it is expected that more members will be honored in the same way. The reputation of this seminar greatly increased and participants totalling approximately 26,000.

Second is the fellowship program to dispatch young doctors and researchers to the leading universities and research institution. Particularly in the cardiovascular field, Dr. Yoshio Yazaki, chairman of the National Hospital Organization, has played a central role in screening applicants. Since 1999 when the initiative started, a total of 52 people have visited America for research purposes. Despite their young age, a couple of researchers among them already became medical professors in Japan.

The third initiative is the Youth International Exchange program. Based on the concept that the most effective way to contribute to world peace is international mutual understanding at a grass root level, since 1994 we have supported the Pacific Rim Student Camp, which is sponsored by companies such as the Yomiuri Shimbun and NTV, and which is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. At this camp, approximately 10 high school students travel to Japan from pacific rim countries to experience out door life with their Japanese peers.

This Foundation inherited these social contribution activities from Banyu Pharmaceutical in 2002 when it was initiated. The most important thing is the continuation of such activities long into the future.
